Eyes

The world has eyes everywhere, human or not, everything you do is felt by the world in some way big or small.

Waves

Posted by kristiex36 on August 23, 2013 at 9:55 AM

The sounds of waves mask the voices as she wades out deeper into the water
Dimmed outlines move about like in a dream you just can't make out the words they are too quiet
Soft orange sunset falls upon her skin like soft hands caressing all the curves with faint unnoticeable heat
Where am I? What is this body I feel? Is this real? Wake up…
Water feels subtle and delicately warm, almost too distant to be a clear or sharp experience
Sand moves fluidly between her toes
For a moment she wonders if this is it
Meaning and existence and life mesh together in chaotic cobwebs of thoughts and emotions
Where do I belong and where will I end or never end?
A voice breaks the frozen moment in time that will last forever
Is it lost? And melts into the water as she is thrust back into the turn of the planets and time
Thrust back into a shared reality of attempt at human connection, interaction somehow reinforcing existence of passing time

Existential Ramblings

Posted by kristiex36 on July 4, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Do we have free will, really? Our universe of matter is governed by laws of physics so why would there be an exception for us. When it comes down to minuscule amounts of time or quantum interactions, could our whole world be explained by billions of quantum interactions at the tiniest scale that are all governed by some type of universal laws of physics down to the quantum level? However, we don't know everything about the quantum world, there are many things that cannot be explained further than random quantum behaviour. Could we attribute free will to us just not understanding all possibilities at the quantum level, or do quantum bits, or waves, at the basic level, act like rolling dice - random to the core. And if this were true, leading to infinite possibilities of everything, why do we have laws of physics at the macro level that govern the curvature of space-time to almost an exact science, or why is the speed of light constant while everything else compensates around it. How would knowing all this or not, affect or relate to humans (chemical reactions forming life). We are still composed of the very same matter which is all governed by the same laws of physics. Our brains produce millions of electrical impulses every second related to our environment and memories and genetics. Could the combinations of all of these things, because they are unique to every individual, like a fingerprint, be similar to the roll of a di, random, therefore allowing us the ability to make free choice? But still, rolling dice doesn't imply fully free choice - just randomness- more like showing us that there is no one possibility for the world just random events that can be changed or be affected by anything else. We could compare this to playing a game where each turn you roll the dice and move your number, even if each person has their own turn, they still weren't in control of whatever random number they got at each turn, and therefore had no freewill in how the game turned out at all. To think that we have the ability to manipulate matter to form our own path through time seems rather impossible within the confines of being made of matter and taking on a human form; does this god complex we have mean more than just the ability to survive and communicated better. Are we limited to what our humanly brains can process (therefore following a set of laws or the randomness of life). Our type of thought process confines us to an ever humanly way of comprehension and understanding. Each way it is looked at brings me back to the constraints. How are we anything more than just and advanced process like erosion of rocks, plant growth or animal instinct, where is the line on free will? Randomness does not equal free will so where is the connection?
On another note, say we don't have free will and it’s just an illusion, would it really matter? To the extent of our consciousness we feel we have free will and the ability to make choices, we still have to tell our bodies to move around, eat etc. we can't just "sit back and enjoy the ride" like watching a movie, and we can’t use not having free will as an excuse to be lazy. Even if we don't truly have free will, and if everything is just random chaos, our motivations and plans and so called choices will continue to play a part in it all. We believe we choose to do things, even if it was only a reaction based on experiences, environment and genetics, you wouldn't know the difference. We will continue our lives deciding what we think we want to do and continue thinking its out of free will.

Textured Moment

Posted by kristiex36 on May 25, 2013 at 6:15 PM

I made this a little while ago and came across it again recently, which sparked my imagination. The ideas behind this image are of time and perception. The image behind the image is of dogs in costumes staring up at the person in front of them, and the girl in sunglasses is looking back at the dogs. The perceiver is only ever taking in one side. What would it be like to experience something objectively and in 3 dimensions, rather than 2?
Sometimes, in our dreams we can be outside observers, but it is so hard to escape our flattened viewpoint. We need to turn in all directions to take it all in, so we can never be experiencing everything at once.
Life travels in one direction through time and each moment passes without stopping; it is constantly arriving while slipping away, so existence within a moment is just motion with a reference point, point in time to point in time, change in position of matter within space. Yet, somehow, we program this constant evolution of motion into moments that seem to stand still. The universe is at the fingertips of our imaginations.

Collage Attack

Posted by kristiex36 on February 11, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Two colourful collages; the first Catfish was inspired by the movie "Catfish" and the idea of how things are not always as they appear at first glance. Sometimes you have to take a closer look to see the truth whether it is coming from a person, organization or even society. Too often we sit back and let the world happen around us without questioning whether it is right or not. Complacency is the insidious fog that can lead to a world tumbling out of control, even without intended deceit. The Second, Kaleidoscope Eyes represents the flash of remembering an infinite amount of time in a fraction of a second and being able to formulate an idea within a whirl of sensory massages that leads you to the next moment.

Throughout time things change but human nature stays the same

Posted by kristiex36 on January 25, 2013 at 1:20 PM

While watching the movie Midnight in Paris, I was inspired by the concept it brought to light about the idea of the “golden age” in which people look back to another era and imagine everything to be better than the present; a time in which there were less worries and thinking was unobstructed by doom of the current time. Many people have this view of regression of society, and that if they could live in another era they would be happier. Are we regressing as people as our values and actions change? How do we know how people felt during those times and that they were not thinking the same thing about the past being a golden age? Going back to the past, ways of life may be different, but human nature stays the same, and what we thought was golden may have more flaws than expected.

Everything Should Be Free

Posted by kristiex36 on January 16, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Animals should have freedom to roam and the opportunity to prosper. Through the Grass Plains represents the uninhibited expanses of natural land sustainable life should continue to enjoy in peace. This piece highlights big cat species as they need large areas to survive.
As most of us know, species extinction is a relentless problem in this era. Most of it is caused by loss of habitat through urban sprawl, factory farming, river dams and resource extraction from logging to mining. Globalization and rapid population growth are only accelerating the process.
Be careful of the companies you support to make sure they do not participate in activities that cause species loss, or animal harm. Even if organizations do not directly support these practices, be aware of the suppliers and partnerships they deal with that could be involved with bad practices, especially in foreign countries where there are few regulations, if any, to protect wildlife.

Is it not staying the same that we really fear?

Posted by kristiex36 on January 5, 2013 at 10:10 AM

Cold Clarity of Awareness represents the ability to move your life into the unknown and to exist within the vast expanse of possibilities and directions before you. It embodies the feeling of clarity with the undetermined, while stepping back from the blur of everyday routines and the pull of societal norms that cloud your sense of self apart from media ideals. Sometimes we take false security by limiting our options to something familiar, yet that itself is condemning our lives. Is it changing that we fear, or is staying the same what we really fear?

Creative Process

Posted by kristiex36 on December 18, 2012 at 8:00 AM

This collage was created for my Creative Marketing class in university. I also wrote a creative process in addtion to examine the steps and ideas involved in creating this collage (below).
I am choosing to analyze the creative process I follow to construct a collage: a visual medium consisting of a variety of previously existing images and words which create a new image. I will construct my paper by outlining my thought process and the steps I take to create my art piece. I start with a general vision, and work in specific details as I go. My creative process does not work with a rigid outline, like a student report or essay, but rather blossoms with inspiration I gather during the creation procedure. Creativity does not exist within a vacuum; I am greatly influenced by my materials and the world around me.
My decision to create this particular piece of art stems from many factors that intrigue me. Firstly, with a collage you are able to create meaning from many different things at the same time, yet nothing in particular. When people look at a collage, it has the potential for each viewer to take something new from it. When starting, I have a general idea of the destination, or concept, I want to arrive at, but without a clear path of how I am going to arrive there. So the initial phases of my creative process involves first envisioning a general outline of the final stage.
The next phase is contemplating an idea to lead the direction of creation. What tone should my collage take? What pictures or colours am I going to look for?
The thought of creating something outside the scope of enforced tasks, the demands of coursework and deadline imposed written material (expected of student life) can be daunting. We are so trained to think within the bounds of strategy and models. To create in the way I do is to escape the confines of right and wrong. It is escape into an atmosphere of visual thought process. I imagine colours and shapes and how they fit together to form a larger concept of beauty – one undefined and original, yet focused and unique. One that does not ask me to meet specific manmade criteria. I allow myself a lot of freedom in this stage to begin collecting the components of my collage.
This collection stage allows much liberty, because I can collect anything that interests me. I don’t have to worry about how it will fit together just yet. Once I have collected all the pieces I can decide which ones to keep or throw away, but in this, still initial, phase, I have the freedom I described above.
I look at the materials I have to work with and gauge how I can use them to get where I want to be: for example, what type of colours and elements of design I have to work with. For this collage, I decided to use magazines and vintage advertisements. I selected images that inspired me to further define my direction. With magazines, I see the contrast between the art I’m creating and the advertising saturating the magazine’s content; it influences the expression I pour into my creation.
I try to place the persuasion and desperation seeping from the advertisements into something more honest and real – a contrast to the fallacy they sell. It inspires me to look at the colours to make a bolder statement, allowing it to flow from day to night.
From this point, the analysis of the pictures and pieces I choose becomes methodical, like finding pieces of a puzzle in which I don’t have the box picture to look at for reference. When I am content with the collection of pieces, I start piecing them together and layering them. I place colours, concepts, and ideas so they flow throughout the collage. I still have a general vision of what it may be like, but, as the pieces come together, I develop a greater understanding. I start in the middle and work my way to the edges weaving branches of colour and rearranging them until they “fit” with my vision.
I take many breaks so I can step back and look at the big picture, then zoom back in to focus on the details; I repeat that process until the next step comes into my mind. After the background, or base, is thoroughly covered, I add highlights on top of this to add more expression and meaning to the sections. When I am satisfied with the way it looks, by determining that the flow and expression speaks some meaning, I seal my work.
Overall, my creative process flows from envisioning “the big picture” – the accomplishment of creating something – to the finer details of putting it all together. I start with allowing myself an abundance of freedom so ideas can generate and derive inspiration from all aspects of life. I allow my thought process to draw me in a direction and flow with it, while still incorporating inspiration and further insight along the way obtained from the tools I work with. From here, I break down the steps I must take to accomplish my task and follow them. I reinforce my actions by stepping back to look at the big picture to make sure my steps align with the end goal. By this process, I am able to advance from idea generation to producing a particular outcome: in this case, a collage that speaks to fast paced, flashy days to the mysterious nights of media laden culture.

Captive to Continuum

I made this for my sister so she could have an awesome cover photo! The design (Captive to Continuum) expresses a vast array of future possibilities, yet with an inescapable direction in which one is confined to. Do you ever feel like your floating through time? How much control do we really have, or is it an illusion?

Time Zero Point One

Big Crunch Time Zero Point One is inspired by my creativity and interest in quantum physics and cosmology. This abstractly represents time at .1 seconds after the big bang in a big crunch universe. Is total density greater than the critical density, or will proton decay mark the end of the Degenerate Era?
